Physico-chemical analysis of biogas substrate is the first step in gathering knowledge on a by-product of biogas application. In order to define the suitability of a product for anaerobic digestion (AD), we offer analysis of the substrate before and/or after digestion at our in-house laboratory. We measure a large set of parameters on the substrates such as pH, Total solids/Dry matter, Volatile solids/Organic matter, COD, related soluble fractions, Alkalinity, Ammonia content, total nitrogen and total carbon. For more advanced applications, we also provide the measurement of Phosphorous, Iron and Volatile Fatty acids.

In addition, analysis of biogas substrate is used for defining the legal compliance of a substrate depending on the final use and the geographical region where the substrate is used. To fulfil national and regional criteria, ReSource Labs proposes the analysis of heavy metals, micro and micronutrients, trace elements, contaminants, etc. and offers to advise in biogas application and/or other technical solutions for substrate use.


Biogas potential test or biomethane potential test (BMP) indicates the biogas yield from any kind of organic substrate. Results from BMP tests are crucial for biogas plant owners where they can be used to provide relevant information on new substrate and optimization of the biogas production. Also relevant for substrate providers and traders, BMP tests define the substrate and its benefits for biogas production and therefore its commercial value.

BMP tests are made in batch mode at mesophilic and thermophilic temperature range depending on the requirement. Batch mode methods offer the opportunity to run a large number of tests simultaneously so that results accuracy is significant and that it is possible to test for the same customer several substrate combinations at a time. It is possible to foresee during batch test inhibition issue, foaming potential and other phenomena that could occur when the substrate is applied at larger scale in existing biogas plants. Full tests usually last up to 90 days. Our methods are based on state of the art methods from the academic and scientific community.


Where BMP batch tests provide an efficient and fast assessment of the maximum potential yield of the substrate, advanced continuous AD at lab-scale can point out kinetic aspects of the AD, synergistic effects for co-digestion and possible inhibition on the long-term. Our laboratory is equipped with several continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) so that long-term tests can be run at the same time for comparative studies. Use of this method for research and development is also relevant when working with substrates that have little or non-existing literature references.

Our specially design volumetric biogas meters give high accuracy for biogas production and combined with gas chromatography method it is possible to determine the exact amount of methane and other gases present in the raw gas (CO2, N2, O2).
